Sip Your Way To Downton Abbey: Highclere Castle Secrets

This past November I had the great pleasure to take a month long journey all around Europe. A good portion of my trip was spent with Viking River cruises and they had an option for a Oxford extension which brought me to Highclere Castle. If you are a fan of Downton Abbey you know Highclere as the main shooting location for the show.

During my visit to the castle we were escorted through the home which is still lived in by the estates Earl of Carnarvon and his family. We took a private tour through the castle and were guided through all the rooms which are used for shooting the show and even rooms that are not shown. In addition to seeing all the rooms our tour guide Diana gave us some secrets of behind the scenes production which can be heard in the video below.

While I was lucky enough to visit the property I was even more excited for when I arrived home and was able to sip on Downton Abbey wine while looking through all my photos. Downton Abbey wine can be found online at wine.com and they even have a great gift pack which includes the wine as well as a candle and tea. The two bottle I received were the following:

Downton Abbey Blanc

Blend: 70% Muscadelle, 30% Semillon Blanc. This classic Bordeaux white wine is an elegant, dry version made with grapes sourced from the famed Entre-Deux-Mers (“between two seas”) region of Bordeaux, France. A lovely, pale yellow color, the nose delivers classic notes of tangerine, which leads to more citrusy notes and delicious flavors of apricots on a harmonious, crisp palate. Enjoy this wine as delicious accompaniment to goat cheese, fish, shellfish and more, or as a refreshing aperitif all on its own.

Downton Abbey Claret

Blend: 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% MalbecThis classic Bordeaux red blend or “Claret” is an elegant, dry wine made with grapes from the renowned Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux, France. Deep purple in color, this wine reveals gorgeous scents of wild berries including blackberries, raspberries and black currants in the glass. An excellent food wine, enjoy this Bordeaux Claret with cheese game, grilled red meats, hearty stews and more.

Whether you love watching the headstrong Mary navigate her estate, or can’t wait to catch up on the “downstairs” gossip, this wine collection will delight any Downton Abbey lover. With wine that even Carsen would approve, you’ll want to curl up with a glass and watch every episode.
